Notification: use this iphone to reset apple id password...what does that mean?

I received a notification and a text message and I have no idea what they mean.

  1. use this iphone to reset apple id password...allow/don't allow (I selected don't allow.)
  2. Your Apple ID Code is: ******. Don't share it with anyone. (From 81961)

I received an email:

Dear XXXXXXX,

A request to reset your password or unlock your account was made for your Apple ID. To continue with this request, enter the code below on the verification page:

If you didn't make this change or if you believe an unauthorized person has accessed your account, go to appleid.apple.com to verify your account information is accurate and up-to-date.

I have no idea what is going on!! Please advise. Thanks.

Perhaps this is a ruse, a scam, w/ phony messages &/or text email etc?

If you did not instigate this, and have only been recipient; they're fake.

Seems you've gotten something, but don't really know what it is(?)

But if you did not ask Apple Inc for help; then it is not a valid reply.

Do not act on it. ~ Ask Apple directly (for confirmation) if to clarify.
