Getting Canon CR3 Support in Photos App

I'm seeing here on the forums Apple admins suggesting for us to use their direct-rival, Adobe, with an application called "DNG Converter" to view our Canon CR3 RAW files.

Yet, these posts are from 2019--surely Apple has added support for one of the world's largest professional camera manufacturers since then, right? ...RIGHT?

Yes, Canon .cr3 support has been added to AFAIR some Big Sur version and Monterey.

If you are still in Mojave, use the .dng converter or move on. I used the converter while waiting support for Canon R6 .cr3.

The Canon R5C remains unsupported on macOS Monterey as it was only announced at the beginning of this year. Canon must contact Apple and provide new data specific to that camera model. Apple has to implement that data in its operating system code, test it, and then determine when that support can be rolled into a future macOS update (or upgrade in the case of Ventura). At this late date, R5C support may not make it into Monterey, and Apple does not do retroactive camera raw support in prior operating systems.
