Email issue after Restore from backup

I upgraded from 11 Pro to the 13 Pro Max. I backed up my 11 pro to icloud and restored the 13 Pro Max from the backup. Everything went great except for my email. On my 11 Pro I had maybe 30 read emails and roughly 10 unread emails. When I opened the email app on the new phone it started downloading messages, it is currently at 3,268 unread messages dating back to 2018. Why is this fetching all these messages that I have previously deleted, and how do I get it to stop? Every time I open the app it fetches more messages.

But why would these previously deleted emails only download when I restore the new phone from backup? Why wouldn’t the email app “fetch” these deleted emails every time I open the app? This also happened when I upgraded from the iPhone 7+ to the 11 Pro, only then it was about 1500 emails. I’m up to 3500 previously deleted emails now.

Sounds like you have your email setup using the POP protocol and should be using the IMAP protocol if possible.

The key difference is where your emails are stored. With POP your emails are downloaded to your device and not removed from the server . With IMAP, emails “reside” on the server and you can easily read and interact with emails from multiple devices.

Check with your email service provider as to what settings you have used for logging into your emails on your phone. If these are POP then you might need to update to IMAP which will allow you to delete emails from the server and your phone.
