How to prevent apps from refreshing after opening another app or accessing another app?

When accessing another open app or opening another app the precious app in use will refresh when accessing again, which loses the place and it filters within the app. How do I prevent apps from losing last left place when switching in between. This is dumb, im tired of starting over whenever I respond to a text etc and return to the previous app.
