unable to move files to trash

am not able to move files to trash, they just stay on desktop

iMac 21.5″ 4K, macOS 12.4

Similar questions

Files downloaded or moved to Downloads folder are immediately moved to Trash As in the title. I assume there is a setting somewhere that I am missing. Anyone know? Thank you!

cant delete files from desktop since update What has changed. can't drag files to bin or right click to remove files. I have to sign in to iCloud to delete the files.

trash issues Hi. Two issues related to trash. 1) cannot move files to trash. 2) I cannot empty trash. In both cases I get windows that look like this and never stop.

What kind of files are they?

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.
