i need to update my operating system but, don't know my purchase date because I bought my macbook air from my old company

Your computer can be upgraded at least as far as Catalina. If you'd like to upgrade further, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu and check the model year; the exact purchase date doesn't matter for this.
