Lots of spinning beachballs and tremendous lag

I'm experiencing a lot of lag as I work, and spinning beachballs, as of a couple weeks ago. I have a good deal of RAM but that doesn't seem to be the issue because that beach ball is spinning even if only one of my apps is open.

I'm a graphic designer in the print industry, so I'm not using a lot of high-intensity video type software. I used Adobe InDesign and Illustrator every day, Photoshop mostly for converting the colorspace and minor photo adjustments. Sometimes the beachball appears just because I clicked an insertion point to type something, just very, very simple stuff like that.

Periodically, I will go through my fonts and turn a lot of them off (Font Explorer X Pro), so I don't think that's the issue. I know fonts can cause a lot of problems, so I'm always keeping an eye on them.

I have needed to upgrade my system for quite some time, so I thought I would do it in case this was a contributing factor to the slowness. So over this past weekend I upgraded to the OS Monterey. Everything is still behaving the same way.

It's really slowing me down in getting work done. I have not run into this literally in YEARS. I'll attach the EtreCheck report, and by the way, I have an outside party do a backup for me every morning.

I'll go number by number.... please understand that although I've been working on Macs as a designer since 1989, "tech" is not my thing so I'm pretty ignorant in many ways about it.

  1. Clean My Mac, as far as I can tell, I haven't used almost since I installed it, and the folder is empty. I trashed the folder just in case, but I don't see any other instances of it and don't know how to find any possible hidden items.
  2. I just uninstalled LogMeIn. I believe an old IT guy used it to access my computer so I could see my desktop on my laptop when I was away from the office. That, by the way, was practically useless since the window was so small I could barely read it anyway and it was incredibly slow. I now have someone who backs up the desktop every day (automated), and maybe he uses the LogMeIn to do it?
  3. I do keep a few Chrome window open each day on my secondary monitor: business email, personal email, Clickup window for one of my bigger clients, and my invoicing. Is that possibly the issue with Chrome, having those windows open all the time?

Thank you for the input. Any other answers for me based on my answers?

ACTUALLY.... I just uninstalled LogMeIn (figured it can always be reinstalled), and now EtreCheck finds NO major problems. I guess I'll see how it performs once I get back to the office (off to a couple meetings).

New report attached.

Jun 13, 2022 11:08 AM in response to sgbe

Taking a quick look at your latest report, I have the following observations/suggestions:

  • Configuration Files: /etc/hosts - Count: 1 - This indicates that your Mac's hosts file has been modified. Typically, this can be caused by malware or by user intervention.
  • FontExplorer X Pro.app 100 notifications - May not be an issue at all, but this app appears to be very "chatty."
  • Security: Antivirus software: Apple and CleanMyMac - Ok, you have been made aware already that CleanMyMac is potentially causing more issues than resolving them and should be completely removed, including any remnants.
  • Unsigned Files: Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.logmein.raupdate.plist - This is a LogMeIn support file that should be deleted. Its location has been provided to you in the /Library/LaunchDaemons/ folder.
  • Plugin: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Silverlight.plugin - Microsoft has dropped support for Silverlight years ago. I suggest that you remove this plugin.
  • Plugin: Plugin: ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/WebEx64.plugin & Plugin: Plugin: ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/RingCentralMeetings.plugin - Unless you are still actively using either of these remote meeting apps, you should remove their plugins.
  • Kernel Extensions: /Applications/RingCentral Meetings.app - Again, if not using this app, this kernel extension should be removed.
  • /Library/Extensions: [Loaded] LogMeInSoundDriver.kext - com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver (4.1.10893 - SDK 10.14) - Part of the LogMeIn app that should be removed.
  • Launch Daemons: [Loaded] com.logmein.raupdate.plist (Not signed - installed ) - Part of the LogMeIn app that should be removed.
  • User Launch Agents: [Loaded] com.logmein.GoToMeeting.G2MAIRUploader.plist (LogMeIn, Inc. - installed 2020-08-27) & [Loaded] com.logmein.GoToMeeting.G2MUpdate.plist (LogMeIn, Inc. - installed 2020-08-27) - Part of the LogMeIn app. These should be removed.
  • User Launch Agents: [Loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist (MacPaw Inc. - installed 2018-03-13) - This is a remnant of CleanMyMac that should be removed.
  • Internet Plug-ins: Silverlight: 5.1.50901.0 (? - installed 2018-03-14) - Part of Microsoft's Silverlight that should be removed. Ref: How to View, Manage, or Remove Safari Plug-ins - Lifewire
  • Clean up: - I suggest that you remove all of the items listed in this section.
  • Diagnostics Information - It appears that your Mac has had, at least, two application crashes. These may not be significant, but are worth noting ... especially if they continue to occur which may indicate an issue with either or both of them.

Hope this helps.

I see you have gotten ride of LogMein and CMM however I don't see any evidence that you have started in Safe Mode to clear some caches. Please do the following:

Please restart the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in the  How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support link.

Note: If you are using a wireless keyboard please either plug it in using the supplied Lightning cable that shipped with it. If you are using a legacy keyboard or a third-party keyboard that does not have re-charging abilities, please use any USB keyboard. Also note that a Safe Mode restart may require you to hold down the shift key for up to 5 minutes before the computer starts in Safe Mode. You will know it is in Safe Mode when you see “Safe Mode” in the upper right of the display.

After restarting in Safe Mode, then restart normally and test.

There is quite a bit wrong with your system. Please read below:

The best antivirus, cleaning app, and overall maintenance app for Mac OS is Mac OS itself. All you need to do with Mac OS to keep it secure and running well is to keep it up-to-date and do periodic (about 1x per week) restarts. Other than that, leave it alone. Adding third party antivirus, cleaning, security and other types of maintenance apps to Mac OS adds no additional level of security. The only thing these apps do is have the opposite affect users want. They make Mac OS slow, unstable, generate odd behavior (much like you are experiencing) and make Mac OS appear buggy.

Please locate the developers uninstall instructions for CleanMyMac and follow to the letter. Then restart in Safe Mode per the directions in Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac and then restart normally.

In addition, I do not see any evidence that you backup your computer. If this is correct this is a short sighted approach and a 100% guarantee that you will lose data. Again, if this is correct, please begin using Time Machine ( Back up your Mac with Time Machine ) which requires an External Hard Disk, I'd recommend the following due to it's high quality, reasonable pricing, high reliability and the service the manufacturer offers, the OWC Mercury Elite Pro series of External Hard Disk.

To be 100% candid, you may want to consider backing up and then doing an erase and install of Mac OS and then restoring your data and manually installing your third party apps again. Being careful to NOT to install CMM or any other cleaning, antivirus, security apps. Yes, this is laborious and tedious but with a system is in such a poor state it is something to consider.

I've removed a bunch of things, as much as I could understand how to... I'm a 33-year Mac user, but frankly, my expertise is in graphic design and not the techie stuff. So a lot of this is just over my head.

Here is the latest etrecheck report. Have restarted two or three times, with once being in safe mode (where I couldn't get anything to do anything....).

I appreciate EVERY ONE of you helping me to figure this out.

And I'm late to the party as well. The new report is useful, in that it shows your Fusion drive is doing a little better, but still under-performing:

Performance:

System Load: 2.86 (1 min ago) 3.37 (5 min ago) 1.77 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O speed: 5.26 MB/s

File system: 31.84 seconds

Write speed: 350 MB/s ⚠️

Read speed: 2621 MB/s

Your Fusion setup has the best hardware specs for success—an 7200RPM SATA 6G mech drive— that should be doing write speeds in the 700MB/sec range or more. We've hit all the software issues, and I can think of only two other things to try.

1) Start the computer in Safe Mode, log in, but do not use the computer. Let it sit in Safe Mode for 30 minutes to an hour. That may allow time for garbage collection on the SSD. You may need to do this more than once. I do not have any Fusion-drive Macs, but that process has worked in my Macs with straight SSDs when their write speeds slowed.

2) If that fails to get the write speeds over 500MB/sec, look at this article:

How to fix a split Fusion Drive - Apple Support

Deep down, I don't think you have a split drive—your read speeds are too high—but we cannot ignore anything at this point.

Consistency: Please continue to use Etrecheck to log drive speeds as we have a baseline established with it. I've found some significant differences between Etrecheck drive scores and some score-only utilities.

If those strike out, you'll need hands-on help that we cannot provide here in this venue.

Best wishes,

Allan

I have downloaded Find Any File, as the MacPaw site was not useful at all in finding an uninstall solution (although there was mention of uninstalling it on Windows).

I've just used it and found a LOT of files that had either MacPaw or Clean My Mac in the name. They have been deleted, and I also emptied my trash to be sure. Now to test it out.

I worked on a simple ad this morning with text, a logo and two images, nothing tedious or image heavy. The beachball came up and spun for 10-30 seconds when I did things like:

  • click on one of the images
  • click on a text block
  • try to move text or image
  • tried to zoom in or zoom out

Seems to be no rhyme or reason but it is GREATLY impacting my workflow and driving me crazy. I have never dealt with this before, in well over 30 years of having and working with Macs.

I will let you know if this fixed the problem, and I thank you all SO MUCH for the feedback I've received here.

Only two things still stand out, to me, in the latest report:

  • Configuration Files: /etc/hosts - Count: 1 - Same comments as before. The links I provided should provide you with the details on what the potential issue is, and how to resolve it.
  • Clean up - Same comments as before.

If after taking care of these, the performance issue continues, then I would second rkaufmann87's suggestion to fully erase your Mac's system drive, install a "fresh" copy of macOS, and then, install/restore your required apps/data.

I see a couple of pachyderms on the premises—other that CleanMyMac (🤮):

1) Your Fusion Drive is grossly underperforming:

Performance:

System Load: 2.97 (1 min ago) 2.92 (5 min ago) 3.15 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O speed: 0.86 MB/s

File system: 20.58 seconds

Write speed: 316 MB/s ⚠️

Read speed: 2576 MB/s

That Read speed should be between 500 and 1000MB/sec for your configurations

NOTE: That metric may improve with you evict (with extreme prejudice) CleanMyMac. I've seen that happen before.

2) LogMeIn is out of control:

Top Processes Snapshot by CPU:

Process (count) CPU (Source - Location)

LogMeIn (6) 480.80 % (LogMeIn, Inc.) ⚠️

EtreCheckPro 14.76 % (Etresoft, Inc.)

WindowServer 10.54 % (Apple)

CEPHtmlEngine Helper (GPU) (5) 7.40 % (Adobe Inc.)

com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.Service 5.82 % (Apple)

and Chrome is using more Memory than Illustrator!:

Top Processes Snapshot by Memory:

Process (count) RAM usage (Source - Location)

Adobe Photoshop 2022 3.64 GB (Adobe Inc.)

Adobe InDesign 2022 2.88 GB (Adobe Inc.)

Google Chrome Helper (Renderer) (11) 2.22 GB (Google LLC) ⚠️

Adobe Illustrator 1.81 GB (Adobe Inc.)

EtreCheckPro 963 MB (Etresoft, Inc.)

Another posibility is Google Drive. I've not used it, but can you see the slowness if you disable it? A slow internet connection or even Google's s tendency to write bloated apps could make you wait.

Jun 6, 2022 09:42 PM in response to sgbe

Apologies for such a late reply.

Looking over your EtreCheck report, to my eye it looks pretty clean, except this:

User Launch Agents:

[Loaded] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist (MacPaw Inc. - installed 2018-03-13)

Apparently there are remnants. You might visit the MacPaw website and see if they have an uninstaller or guidance to completely remove the app components. You may have to reinstall the app as an uninstaller may come with it, iirc.

If you get no help there, Find Any File is a lightweight utility app for finding old app leftovers so you can delete them. Use it to search for "clean my mac" or "macpaw".

+1 to all of Allan Jones' comments above.

Jun 13, 2022 12:08 PM in response to rkaufmann87

Thank you. I recently did a search (not just the general spotlight one, but the other search that was recommended in this thread, Find Any File) for anything to do with MacPaw or CleanMyMac, and thought I had gotten every bit of it, deleted it and emptied the trash.

I am doing a new search with it to see if it finds any more. You may see above in the thread that MacPaw was not helpful in "uninstall" procedure on a Mac, but they did show something for Windows. That's why I used Find Any File.

By the way, I do have a third party (a company I know and trust, and have worked with the president of the company) who does a backup for me every morning. Time Machine had been backing up, but my external drive is quite full and just isn't cutting it anymore. I really should get a new one of those.
