The Apple Remote (aluminum) is the name for the old style remote with replaceable battery.
The Siri Remote (2nd generation) also has an aluminum body, and is rechargeable.

Charge directly to a computer or to a power adapter, like for iPhone or iPad.

There are no indicators on the remote to show it is charging. Read the charge level in Settings.
