iPad Deleting Text in Word/Office

My iPad will delete entire paragraphs in Microsoft word, and as a college student, it’s forced me to rewrite entire parts of essays. I figured out that it only happens after I’ve pressed the backspace on my keyboard attachment, and then tap the screen. How do I turn off this function?
