Mid 2009 Macbook Pro upgrade OS

I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro with 8GB Ram and a 1TB solid state drive. I would like to upgrade the OS from El Capitan 10.11.6 to something more current. Is there any way to do this? It is a great computer, works well and is still lightning fast after all these years.
