unable to download the new version of MacOS Monterey.

I have a McBook Air with the original Mohave OS. I have been trying to download the the Monterey OS and after clearing out much data from the hard drive and freeing up enough hard drive space, after the download process of some 2 hours I get a message that the new OS can not download to my hard drive. Help??
