How do I re-upload the files on my Mac onto iCloud?

I have downloaded some files that were backed up on iCloud onto my Mac. I am low in storage right now and would like to upload and store them back on my iCloud as opposed to my laptop. How do I do that?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.14

It doesn't work that way. If you delete files from your Mac that are being synced to iCloud then they will also be removed from iCloud and you will have lost them. iCloud is not an offsite storage facility and content there is not "backed up".

You need a local storage device to archive your files and preferably multiple because having only one is perilous.
