"No permission" to view photo or open file

An old problem, but no clear answers: when I try to open an older or imported file in e.g. Quicktime or Preview, my El Capitan says:

"The file “xxx.jpg” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it. To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info."

This remedy does not work, and it shows I have Read and Write permission on the files.

Other programs open the files just fine, only the default app refuses them.

I would love a once-and-for-all solution to this... thanks in advance!

Hey dolphy020,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Sounds like you're having issues opening some particular files using Quicktime or Preview on El Capitan. We'd be happy to help.

To get started, the first thing we'd suggest doing, is checking to see if your Mac is eligible for a newer macOS version. Often times, simply getting your Mac fully updated can resolve a lot of issues, especially since you've already ensured you have the permissions necessary.

To check, go to System Preferences > Software Update. For more info, check out: Update macOS on Mac

If the issue persists afterward, let us know if new .jpg files are able to be opened using the default app successfully or not. If so, this could indicate corruption of these old files potentially.

We hope this information helps out

Take care!
