The USB SuperDrive is not compatible with older Mac's that have a built-in SuperDrive.

If you have a 2012 or later iMac.

1. Try a different USB port.
2. Plug it directly into the iMac.
3. Test some different CDs and DVDs.
4. Make sure the Superdrive is right side up.

Is it connected directly to your Mac? You cannot use normal hubs.

can't plug it directly as SD has USB A connector, needs USB 3??? Does the Apple adapter work vs trying a hub, which does not?

Use only a authentic Apple adapter USB A to a USB C and it worked on my new MacBook. Finally!
