Files move automatically to the top once the file is open

once a open a file in a folder the file automatically moves up the stack of files in the folder instead of staying where it was.

how do I make the files not move

Change the sort order of the folder.

Manually stacking files? I'm trying to stack my files on top of one another manually but whenever I try to do so, the files just goes back to its old spot on my desktop. And if I try to slightly move a file from its current spot, it just goes right back, even though it isn't going on top of another file. I'm not sure how to fix this.

Moving a file by dragging I seem to remember that I used to be able to drag a file (click, hold, drag) to a folder and the folder would open up. Or move a file on to folder in the side bar and a window associated with that folder would pop open. Has that handy moving technique been removed from the system? Of have I set something incorrectly?

Folders on Finder won't expand after hovering a dragged file on top of them. I'm trying to drag and drop files into a specific subfolder, but rather than automatically expanding after hovering with the file dragged over it, I have to physically drop on each folder. It's very time-consuming and annoying. Is there a setting or box I haven't checked?
