When I try to select a clip to move into the editing window, there's a yellow window around it and a marker. I can't move the clip without inadvertently cutting off the beginning of the recording. See below.

The issue was that the edit window was only showing a fragment of the full video. I had to move the slider to see the whole thing. I don't use iMovie very often, but I don't remember that it worked that way the last time I used it. Feeling sheepish.

Looks normal to me. Click on the + sign and the clip will automatically move into the timeline.
