I want to reset an old watch to give to a friend. I cannot open it because it is not connected to any phone anymore. How do I reset it to factory settings?

If you can follow the steps in the 'Before you buy a watch from a third-party' section of this article:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Apple Watch, or buy one from someone else - Apple Support

then it is reset to factory conditions and all your personal information is safe.
