Pairing Apple Watch

I reset my watch to factory settings. When attempting to pair the watch with my phone, it shows that a software update is required. When trying to update, an error comes up saying "Unable to Check for Updates". It says I am not connected to the internet. How do I connect the Apple Watch to the internet after it has been restored to factory settings?
