Cloud Photo Library is already turned on, but photos are still taking up space on my MacBook?

My Photos section of my MacBook is taking up a lot of memory. What do you recommend? When I check the storage section of my MacBook, I see that Photos is taking up over 70 GB of my storage. I have checked the "Recommendations" and asked for it to "Store in Cloud" but apparently my iCloud Photo Library is already turned on. I'm not really sure what to do now. Surely there is a better place for my Photos to be stored than on my laptop's memory?

Photo library is empty but still taking up 6GB of space I'm trying to clear space on my macbook air, so I deleted every photo and video in my photos app. The storage it was using did clear a lot, but it says it's still taking up 6GB of space despite there being nothing in there. Is that something to do with iCloud, or what's happening?

Why is my photo library stored on my macbook hard drive when I specifically use cloud storage for my photos? I pay for cloud storage for my photo library specifically to free up space on my devices. I noticed today that my photo library is taking up 60GB of space on my macbook's hard-drive and I never opted-in to storing those photos on my hard drive. How do I clear this space without losing my photo library and how do I prevent this moving forward?

Have you also selected "optimise mac storage" in photos preferences?

If so, then the full size originals of an existing library will only be removed if the space is needed (ie once your mac starts to get full). There is a way to force a fully optimised library, see:
