I have a 2013 MacBook Pro running Catalina and use an external SSD to store it on. I just upgraded to the new 2021 16” MacBook Pro. I am unable to open the photos library on the new machine. Has anyone else run into this issue and if so is there a way to get it work?

Hi……It is formatted correctly and I have been using it to hold the photos library on my old Mac for a couple of years without any issue. When I plug it into the new Mac and select it as the location of my photos library it just freezes up photos and I eventually need to force the app to close. I can open it up no problem on the old Mac.
What format is the external? It needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS
What format is 'formatted correctly'?
Photos v7 is more stringent than previous versions of acceptable disk formats, so previous experience is less relevant.
