When I click the safari icon on my mac, the search bar doesn't come up. I am not sure what I have done. I am having to search on google rather than safari.

You probably accidentally customized the safari toolbar so that it no longer had the search bar.

To bring it back, just control click/right click on the tool bar and then select the customize tool pop-up menu. This will bring up the toolbar customization palette, from there you can drag any of the tools onto the toolbar or off of the toolbar. To put the search bar back, just find it in the palette and drag it to wherever you want it to be on the toolbar.
