Presumably your “external Apple keyboard” is an Apple Magic Keyboard - principally designed for a Mac computer? If so, the keyboard must be successfully paired with your iPad.
Pair Magic Keyboard with iPad – Apple Support
Once paired and active, your on-screen keyboard (full, split or floating) should be automatically suppressed.
