I have a new macbook air. I hooked it up to my external monitor, but if I close the lid it freezes the external screen and it doesn't respond to anything I do. If I open it again it works fine. This is how I typically worked on my ancient macbook pro for many years. While I can obviously just mirror the screens and leave the lid open, it seems like I shouldn't have to do this.

You must have the charger connected and working while in clamshell mode.
Dummy me....I figured it out after I made the post. New monitor with usb-c...which powers the device and allows me to shut the lid. Thanks for not laughing at me :-)
I'm using 12.2.1 with USB-C monitor and it works great....however, if the macbook goes to sleep, sometimes I have to unplug the usb-c and plug it back it then it's fine. Maybe try that?
My MacBook Air M1 was working fine in clamshell mode with an LG monitor connected via USB C which also charged the computer. With 12.2.1 that stopped. Now if the lid is closed the screen goes dark on the monitor. So far no resolution from Apple.
There is no clamshell setting. Set your display to mirror (if that is what you want) then be sure charger is connected and close the lid.
I have the same question. I have my macbook air connected to my monitor via usb-c so it charges the macbook at the same time. There used to be a clamshell setting but I am not finding it in Monterrey
Is the Mac charger plugged in and working? What connection are you using between the Mac and Monitor?
