Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if your Mac is a 2012 or newer model, click on Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey; if it's already running one of those, check for updates in the Mac App Store. Alternatively, switch to a product such as Firefox for websites requiring a newer browser.

Catalina and newer won't run 32-bit software; download and use Go64 to scan for it. To check other programs, click here and look them up.
