My Magic Keyboard will not connect to my iPad 11 Pro

My magic keyboard will not connect to my ipad 11 pro. I just bought both products from apple and there should be no issue, however when i attach the ipad to the keyboard, it lights up and the touch pad works, but i cannot use any of the keys.
