Unable to check for Update message

When I go to pair my Apple Watch Series 3 with my iPhone 12, I keep getting a message stating Unable to Check for Update. Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the Internet. My phone is connected to the WiFi in our house and other devices are working on the WiFi so the internet is not the problem.
