how do I see whether my Iphone is unlocked or not?

If you are referring to being carrier locked, you will need to try a SIM from another carrier in the device. The newer iPhones have a display for that in Settings, but you will not see that on an iPhone 4s as indicated in your profile. The only way to find out on that device is to try your SIM.
