Hi,

Sorry you are having issues with your Contacts and associated devices.

Assuming he is signed into his Apple ID within Settings > Name on both devices, it would be expected behavior for you to not see his devices listed in your iCloud Settings.

Settings > Name > scroll to the bottom > Devices

The devices shown here are the current devices signed into iCloud with the Apple ID.

This means those devices are eligible for receiving two-factor verification codes, also known as trusted devices.

A device can also be associated to an Apple ID for purchases, Apple Music content, and Automatic Downloads.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204074

Removing a device from this area within Settings will then remove it from being associated to that Apple ID at all, including the ability for it to receive two-factor verification codes.

*Note: if activation lock is enabled, removing the device from the Apple ID will not disable Activation Lock. The device would also need to be removed from Find My App or iCloud.com/find.

As for the Contacts issue, could you confirm how they were set on the original device?

Were they backed up via iCloud+, added through a connected Email account, Synced via iTunes to the device, or used with a third party service/App; such as Outlook?

Depending on how the Contacts were on the device originally will assist with providing an accurate resolution to getting them onto the new device.

iCloud Contacts

  1. confirm Settings > Name > iCloud > Contacts is swiped green/enabled on the original device.

If it is already enabled, and you have no connected Email accounts, you can try to Restore the contacts on iCloud.com > Sign In with Apple ID > Account Settings > scroll to the bottom > Restore Contacts.

Email Account

  1. confirm Settings > Contacts > Accounts > click on each connected account and confirm if Contacts is swiped green/enabled. If it is, add that email account to the new device to recover the missing contacts.

Synced via iTunes on Mac/PC

  1. Plug the device into iTunes on the Mac or PC.
  2. Once the device shows up in iTunes, click on it and then select the Info pane > check the box that says Sync Contacts > Sync Now.

Third Party App or Service

  1. Redownload the affected App.
  2. Sign in
  3. Begin the process of recovering your contacts through this App, and possibly set the App as your default account. Settings > Contacts > Default Account > Outlook/other third party example name

It isn't actually devices that are added, it is Apple IDs/accounts. Anything signed into the Child's Apple ID will be have access to the Family Sharing group. Sign into the child's Apple ID on the second device and Family Sharing features should be activated.

As you mentioned - . When I look at the iPhone settings he is signed in to his ID and when I look at his iCloud account you see both devices. I just don’t know why I am only seeing the iPad linked to his ID on his device and account -

You can look the account by signing in with your Apple ID and password with account credentials at www.icloud.com using a browser , both devices are visible because , iPad and iPhone are signed in with same Apple ID and password and same credentials created that the son is using in his iPhone / iPad Check your Apple ID device list to see where you're signed in - Apple Support

Note : don't remove the device from iCloud.com as family sharing account is activated , this article is just to explain why two devices iPhone / iPad are being showed .

When you look his iPhone a single Apple ID that is obvious two Apple ID can't be simultaneously signed in the device .

Regarding family sharing account you are the organiser , and son is being invited in the account to join family sharing .

You also mentioned - not able to link the iPhone. to his ID on my device.

See the article Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

Avoid sharing an Apple ID

Apple recommends that you do not share your Apple ID. Instead, set up Family Sharing so that each person uses their own Apple ID. This way, your family can share purchases, subscriptions, and more without sharing personal information like email, text messages, or passwords.

If you share your Apple ID with a family member, certain services will treat you as the same person.

The son can leave the family sharing account from his iPad Leave Family Sharing - Apple Support

And if you are interested that son will join for second time in family group , ( say in iPhone it is example1@gmail.com and in iPad example2@yahoo.com ) , the Apple ID password and its credentials should be different .

So what to do , the son leaves family group from iPad , the iPad and account is separated Leave Family Sharing - Apple Support , the son should sign out the Apple ID from ipad Sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac - Apple Support

And sign in with new Apple ID that should not be repeated anywhere in family group account Sign in with your Apple ID - Apple Support

In case if he is not having an Apple ID , he only should create it How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support

Now you as family organiser can sent invitation to son on his iPad , the son has to accept it see the articles Join a Family Sharing group in iCloud - Apple Support

The second device iPad is added in the family account .

Thanks. He now has two devices. An iPad with cellular and now an iPhone with a separate cellular plan. I didn’t watch the whole transfer of data from the iPad in the initial set up and lining the device to his ID but I didn’t hear him complain that things went wrong. When I look at the iPhone settings he is signed in to his ID and when I look at his iCloud account you see both devices. I just don’t know why I am only seeing the iPad linked to his ID on his device and account - not able to link the iPhone. to his ID on my device. I had to play with a lot of settings but there’s still something wrong also with his phone not transferring contacts. Sorry for the confusion. Both of his devices are linked to his ID. Only one appears in shared app data when I’m logged in to mine.
