I have a MacBook Pro model #A1398 - which backup hard drive should I use and I do not want to format.

Welcome to the Apple Support community,

We are not Apple, we are just users like you...

Any external drive will do for backup such as the WD My Book or the Seagate Backup Plus. Just set it up with Time Machine and away you go!
