Can't hear sound on iMovie when using the arrow keys

On prior versions of iMovie to get precision cutting you could hear the video sound when you used the arrow keys. That way you can tell when you completed a word say prior to taking a deep breath. Now when I move the playhead with the arrow button I can't hear the sound. Is there is setting or fix for this? If not, is there a new way to get precise with the sound for cutting the clip. Letting it play in real time is too fast to hear the end of a word. Thanks!

Hi,

Go to the View item in the iMovie menu and click on Audio Skimming to activate that feature.

In addition to the arrow keys, you can also use the j, k and l keys to scroll. To scroll forward press the L key. Tapping it multiple times will progressively increase the speed of the scroll. Press the k key to stop. Press the j key to scroll backward, and increase speed with each tap.

Also, to make the audio play slower you can select the video clip or separate audio clip, and then Control-click on it to reveal a pop-up menu. From the pop-up menu select Show Speed Editor. That will cause a speed adjustment slider handle to appear in the upper right hand corner of the clip. Drag the handle to the right to slow down the clip and to the left to speed it up. If you do it this way you may not need to use the audio scrolling feature, but instead play it in real time.

Use the slider above and to the right of the timeline to fully expand out your timeline, to make it easier to edit the sound.

I don't think it is possible to hear the audio when you scrub along the timeline but you should wait for someone else to confirm or deny this statement.

If you are really serious about needing this facility you probably need a professional editing app and the best FREE one is Davinci Resolve which can actually do more than Final Cut Pro though it does have a bit of a learning curve.
