cant save pages document to desk top file

I create a Pages document and it won’t save to an existing desktop file

opening a pages document I just created a new document in Pages (version 8.1) and saved it to my desktop. I am using High Sierra as my OS. I walked away, and went back to open that document , but nothing happens when I double click on the desktop image, even though the image is not greyed out. It took me some time to create this document, and it is the first time this has happened . How do I open it? Why is this happening?

why can't non-MAC users open Pages? Why can't non-MAC users open Pages? Every Pages document I create has to be exported to either PDF or Word for anyone to read. This is a hassle for many reasons, not the least of which is if I make an edit, I have to re-export my document.

When the intended saved document and an existing file on your Desktop bear the same name, the Finder will pop a dialog offering to replace the existing document. If you click the Replace button in that dialog, the existing file is overwritten with the new content.
