Time Machine backups erasing previous backups
Will backing up on an old time machine drive erase previous backups?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.
If the backup drive is running out of storage space, yes.
It will also delete old backups as time goes on, keeping only daily backups for the past month and weekly backups for previous months.
