Can't factory reset or update OS on macbook pro 15'' mid 2010

Hello all,


I've been trying to clean my aunt's laptop and I can't factory reset or update the OS. It's a macbook pro 15'' mid 2010, Mac OS X (version 10.6.8. I've tried:

  1. Command+R but it seems that the fact of the computer itself is old, this functionality is not available.
  2. System preferences > update : tells me that it doesn't need any update.
  3. via browser, but it's also unavailable.


Do you have any advices for me? Thank you!

A 2010 Mac can run up to macOS 10.13 High Sierra. If macOS 10.12.6+ has been installed at some point, then the laptop will have access to Internet Recovery Mode (Command + Option + R). Unfortunately Apple makes it difficult for users to upgrade macOS when the most recent OS is not compatible with your Mac. You can access the installer for macOS 10.11 and 10.13 from links within this Apple article which also contains optional instructions for creating a bootable macOS USB installer:

You should make sure to have a good backup before attempting to upgrade macOS in case something goes wrong. I also recommend creating the optional bootable macOS USB installer as well.
