closing cover on macbook air with big sur turns off external display

I have followed the suggestions for changing settings in the power saver but closing the lid still turns off the external display. Any other suggestions?

If you want the lid closed and external monitor still on -- aka "clamshell mode"

  1. connect MBA to power source
  2. have external keyboard and mouse connected (wired or wireless)
  3. connect to external monitor
  4. boot up the system, then close the lid
