Burn DVD from iMAC

thanks for your input. :) everything you said is true. when i first tried burning DVDs using the tools built-in with macOS, they ended up being discs that could only be viewed when inserting them into a mac. to make them a format that your average DVD player can read requires other software. "Burn" does that. and it's free.

You do not want to copy - you need to have it encode it to burn it to a DVD

once you have the app, it's just a matter of drag and drop the files from their location on the mac into the Burn app window.

"Video DVDs" are not just simple data disks. They require a specific format to be playable on video DVD and BluRay players, you cannot just copy file and burn.

You will first need an app that can convert your videos into a DVD format that can then be burned do a dedicated DVD video disk.

The previously mentioned app may do what you need.

I can burn discs without any third-party app. You can also burn discs via Finder app

i can burn disks without third party apps too. but those do not play in a DVD player other than those that run on a mac. (*like apple's USB superdrive) you need to format them differently for stand-alone DVD players.

Apple has never supported blu ray because Sony owns it and has not licensed it to Apple.

I've always used Roxio Toast which includes a blu ray plugin. In order to be able to burn a DVD which will play on any player, you need software that will properly encode the movie to play it elsewhere. There is Burn (free) which is a basic app; Roxio Toast costs money but has many features. It will also copy content from one CD or DVD to another and other features.

yes, i missed that. babowa is correct. don't choose "copy". instead choose "video".

i recommend you read the help instructions by clicking on the "?" before your first try.

I use Toast 19 and make Blu Ray DVD's all the time. Along with Toast 19 you will also need their blu ray plug-in.

All Apple Macs are not compatible with Blu-Ray Discs including the DVD. You can use the regular DVD Player instead.
