Spotify seems to cause frequent instability on High Sierra/MBPro late 2011

My elderly but thus-far reliable MBPro is behaving erratically, and it always seems to occur when using the Spotify app.

By "erratically" I mean that when using other apps with Spotify open, I sometimes get the beach-ball for minutes at a time; sometimes the computer just restarts spontaneously. I haven't gotten any specific error-messages.

The hard drive has plenty of space (280 G).

I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else; or maybe it's my hardware in need of an update!

I'm going to try not playing Spotify for a week and see if the problem occurs anyway.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
