I have a Imac Late 2009 with a OS X 10.9.5 and there are no updates available on the App Store. Can it be upgraded to OS X Yosemite? or is this IMac just too old?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and click on the link for Yosemite, El Capitan, or High Sierra in the Related Article above.
These are full-version upgrades and won't show up in the Updates list.
