I have an external hard drive from an older iMac how do I put some things on my new iMac

I have a new iMac and have time machine backup from a 2009 iMac How do I transfer only the items I want from that external hard drive

First, inherit the backups: If your new Mac inherits your backup history - Apple Support. Then, you can Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support.
