I would like to use an external monitor as my main screen while keeping my MacBook closed. However, there is a concern about the thermal performance when the lid's closed. If the MacBook get hot, does it hurt the built-in display?

Thanks for the reply. Just make sure it's safe for the built-in screen when the laptop gets really hot. I sometimes do CPU intensive jobs.
