If you have the original super slow 5400 rpm drive in that, yes, it will do everything at a snail's pace. You could install a faster drive (SSD), but the question is if it would be worthwhile on a 9 year old outdated machine.

UPDATE takes the current major version and applies all Update, but does not change the Major version, like 10.10 Yosemite.
What I hear you asking for is a way to UPGRADE to a new major version. That is treated like a new purchase, but on sale for $0. Your Mac can install up to macOS 10.14 Catalina.
Make sure you have a Trusted backup -- there is no easy way to go back unless you ERASE the drive, which requires a backup or you lose your files. You may want to consider going to High Sierra first, then on to Catalina, as the graphic subsystem undergoes a MAJOR change for Mojave and Catalina.

This is partially helpful. I had just wanted to update to the current OSX, and I don't receive updates anymore. My computer is very slow, however it does have lots of memory available.
