When I connect the iPad using a cable (USB-C on the iPad to USB port on the Macbook), the Macbook does not recognize the iPad. There is no activity at all. The iPad does not display a connection, not even that the battery is charging. The cable is good (it can charge the iPad when connected to AC, and it allows the connection of other types of devices). Is it possible that the new iPad mini 6 is not compatible at all with a Macbook Pro 2011? Or is it a port issue? Could I connect the iPad to the Macbook's FireWire or other port?

Yes. With the proper adapter: USB-A to USB-C adapter - Amazon.com

Yes - you simply need the correct cable.

Presumably your Mac has the older USB Type-A connection. As such, you just need a USB-C to USB Type-A cable. These are readily available from good computer stores - including Apple.
