pop ups on iMac

I keep getting pop ups on my iMac for (large number) wants to access to control "safari" - it also says that "allowing control will provide access to documents and data in safari and perform actions within the app - I don't click on the pop up and it goes away, inevitably it comes back.

I'm not sure if this is a virus - but it sure does seem like it is.
