Efficient migration from High Sierra to new M1 iMac
Is there a way to avoid transferring useless system junk from an old Mac to a new one using Migration Assistant, or is everything copied, bit-for-bit?

According to this article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350 you have some choice when it comes to transferring using Migration Assistant.

I had read that article, but did not find anything in it suggesting the Migration Assistant evaluated the usefulness of system files. It seems to allow only selecting which users' files to move. There is a good deal of flab in the system files on my old Mac (300GB of space not in user files, but system files). Seems wasteful to ship all that over to brand-clean Mac. Thanks for your reply, though.
No problem, glad I was able to help you.
