Try an SMC Reset.

Is the Magsafe LED lit amber or green?

Try removing or disconnecting the battery and try to power on the laptop using just the charger. A bad battery or a battery that is completely drained can prevent a Mac from powering on or charging the battery. Just be careful if you have a Retina model laptop.
