apple watch update problem

Hi there i have a series 3 watch and an iphone 8, i was trying to update my watch through my phone and the app unpaired my watch and every time i try to pair it again it says update now, when i tap this it goes so far then i get the message 'unable to check for update'' checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet' even though i am connected to my home wifi. if i try to skip the update it resets the watch and im back to square one again, can anyone help please.
