OS: no updates available for me

My MacBook is using the version 10.10.5 of the software, OS X Yosemite. I need to update it because I need applications that require earlier versions. My app store has no option to update the software. How do I update the software then?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook Air model you have, click on El Capitan, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur.
