mail does not delete

I cannot get rid of my emails permanently. Sometimes they go away, but when I reopen Mail, they are back again. There are thousands of these. Suggestions would be very welcome.

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)

Is this email service accessible from the web? If YES then you can clear out folders on the Web account and see whether that clears up matters for the Mail app on your MacBook Pro.

I have one account that is accessible via webmail and I have cleared out those folders, but the mail in the Mail app stills remains unable to be deleted. But thank you anyway.

Can you delete that email account and then add it back again?

I have tried that but will do so again and see what happens. Perhaps I should delete the Mail app and re-install. That is a bit scary though. thank you
