USB no device
Does it cause any problems to have a USB plugged into the iMac but not connected to an external device? Should I unplug USB cables when not connected to an external device?

No, that will not cause a problem.

FWIW I’ve always leave two spare USB cable connected to my Mac. One for syncing iOS devices and a USB 3.0 cable for attaching redundant backup drives.
