Flashing ? folder issue - I don’t care what I need to do to turn it on as I normally would; is my data lost? It told me to reinstall Mojave but I bought my MacBook Air with Catalina installed and updated to BigSur when it was released?! This was so out of the blue and inconvenient; everything was working perfectly 12 hours ago!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.2

Lesson to learn - Do I have a Rescue Plan In-Place. This comprises having a Time Machine Backup and for addition purposes - two Tested Bootable Clones each to separate external drives. This is insurance incase the upgrades goes sideways

Worth reading but does not resolve your situation right now.

Follow up - all my data was wiped. My laptop basically carried out a factory reset apart from screenshots and files that can be open from the apps I used to have. All my installed apps, documents, pictures; practically everything in. ‘Finder’ has gone. Apple I don’t know why the **** my device was a target in this but this is not forgivable. As a student who relies on their laptop everyday in their life for one day to come by and just decide to wipe all data is just unforgivable.

If everything was Wiped - Shutdown computer and disconnect all external drives. Attach to charger. Restart computer and immediately hold - Command + r - keys. This Recovery Mode. Now, attach your Time Machine Backup drive. Recovery Mode will present various Options and choose Restore from Time Machine. Choose a dat before the upgrade to Big Sur.
