Watch display

The display on my watch does not go off when not in use

Yes it is if you turn always on display to off.

  1. Open the Settings app  on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness, then tap Always On.
  3. Turn off Always On.

If you have a watch 5 or 6 then that is called always on display,if you drop your wrist then the screen dims instead of going off completely,it can be turned off.

Is this what you are referring too?.
